Readiness Program

Language scores, test prep, extracurriculars: parents have it all arranged. But an anxious child in a classroom can't take in the lesson, no matter how good the teacher.

We work with international school students in Grades 7–12. Before they go abroad, we help them build inner resources they can rely on, organized around five abilities.

Why start with the inner foundation

When emotions are steady, learning sticks and students go further.

  1. The pressures of studying abroad stack up.

Leaving home, a new language, new classrooms, new ways of being graded: it all hits at once. In a survey of 130 Chinese international students at Yale, 45% reported symptoms of depression and 29% reported symptoms of anxiety.

(Han et al., 2013, Journal of American College Health)

  2. Self-discipline predicts grades better than IQ.

A study that followed 140 eighth-graders found that self-discipline explained twice as much of their later academic performance as IQ did.

(Duckworth & Seligman, 2005, Psychological Science)

  3. Social and emotional skills show up in grades.

A meta-analysis of 213 school-based social and emotional learning programs, covering some 270,000 students, found that participating students gained an average of 11 percentile points in academic achievement.

(Durlak et al., 2011, Child Development)

  4. Emotional skills are linked to better grades, and it's not just about being smart.

A meta-analysis of 158 studies and more than 42,000 people found that higher emotional intelligence is associated with better academic performance, even after controlling for intelligence and personality.

(MacCann et al., 2020, Psychological Bulletin)

That's why we put well-rounded development before departure. The five abilities aren't extra credit. They're the foundation that makes language scores, test prep, and activities pay off.
